Best time to visit Rarotonga

Choose the month that fits your priorities — drier weather, warmer water, quieter travel or seasonal activities.

The simple answer

Rarotonga is warm year-round, so there is no single month that works for everyone. The official Cook Islands weather guide currently describes April to November as the drier months, with an average temperature around 26°C, while November to March is warmer and more humid with occasional tropical rain.

Best balance: the shoulder months

Cook Islands Tourism currently highlights April, May, September and October as useful shoulder months because they often combine warm temperatures with relatively dry conditions. If weather is your main priority, these are sensible months to compare first.

June to August

These are the cooler Cook Islands months. Official monthly averages currently show daytime highs around 25–26°C and lower overnight temperatures. They also line up with New Zealand and Australian winter escape demand, so popular accommodation can book earlier.

November to March

Expect warmer temperatures, more humidity and more tropical showers. The official guide says rainfall is often in short morning or afternoon bursts rather than constant all-day rain. If you travel in this period, build flexibility into lagoon and outdoor days.

Seasonal extras

Humpback whales are commonly associated with the July–October period around Rarotonga, while the trade-wind period from May to October is highlighted for kitesurfing. These are bonuses rather than reasons to choose a month on their own.

Weather is never guaranteed. Use monthly climate patterns for planning, then use a live forecast once your trip is close.
