A living history

Faith has shaped island life for two centuries.

Christianity reached Rarotonga in the early 1820s. The CICC history records the work of Papeiha and the acceptance of the gospel in 1823; churches later became enduring centres of worship, language, music and community life. Arorangi's present church dates from 1849, while congregations around the island continue distinct local traditions.

That history includes profound cultural change as well as faith. Visit with curiosity and respect, and remember that today's churches belong first to their congregations.

Attend respectfully

Before you go.

Dress neatly

Choose modest clothing with shoulders and knees covered. A light layer is useful in an airy church.

Arrive early

Be seated 10–15 minutes before the service and follow local guidance about where visitors should sit.

Ask before photos

Do not photograph or record worshippers without permission. Silence your phone and avoid distracting movement.

Stay for the service

The singing is memorable, but it is part of worship. Plan to take part respectfully rather than dropping in briefly.
