Five things worth booking before you fly to Rarotonga

Practical planning advice from Rarotonga.co.nz — designed to help you make fewer, better decisions.

Updated 2026-08-30. Time-sensitive operator schedules and policies should always be rechecked before booking.

Rarotonga rewards flexibility, so the goal is not to pre-book every hour. Book the few things that can shape the trip, then leave space.

1. Your first-choice accommodation

Area matters almost as much as property. Muri is easiest for lagoon activities and walkable choice; Titikaveka and Aroa suit quieter lagoon time; the west is strong for sunsets.

2. One lagoon cruise

Cook Islands Tourism currently treats lagoon cruises as a signature experience. In Muri, Koka and Captain Tama's are the two established glass-bottom options highlighted by Tourism.

3. One cultural evening

Te Vara Nui and Highland Paradise are obvious book-ahead anchors. Choose by setting and cultural format rather than trying to fill multiple evenings with similar shows.

4. Aitutaki — if it matters to you

The current official day tour is a full Monday–Saturday day. If Aitutaki is a trip priority, decide before arrival whether it is a day trip or a two-to-three-night stay.

5. Any specialist/high-demand experience

Turtle tours, diving, guided treks or particular small-group experiences can have safety, weather and capacity limits. Book the operator you actually want rather than whichever is left.

What not to over-book

Beach days, cafés, island loops, markets and relaxed evenings are better when you can move them around the weather.
